It’s Monday! Time once again for Monday School, STILL “The Rational Corrective To All That Nonsense They Tried To Teach You Yesterday!”
Today’s lesson is going to be a bit of a review cause I’m coming back to an issue I’ve discussed a few times already. I’ve already dedicated a few entries to the issue of gun control. Today I’m going to do a quick recap of those entries and provide some new information where religion is concerned regarding the topic.
About a week after the shooting in Aurora, Colorado… I posted a Monday School titled ‘Would Jesus pack heat’ and I covered the quotes and passages in the bible that suggested Jesus would never approve of his followers hording guns in their homes. He refused to carry a sword or show any act of aggression towards the Romans, so chances are he would refuse to carry a gun as well given that he was a pacifist. He believed in turning the other cheek, not popping a cap into someone.
So for all those gun nuts who seem so think it’s their ‘God given right’ to own a gun, I’m curious to how people are going to respond to this. Last week, the Vatican released a statement concerning the gun control legislation that Barak Obama is purposing.
Would you like to know what Pope ‘eggs’ Benedict thought of gun control?
According to a statement from the Vatican, Obama’s proposals are a ‘step in the right direction’.
Do you get that Catholics? Your religion actually thinks Obama is right about gun control!
I have a feeling this is going to put a lot of Catholics and possibly a lot of Christians in general in a really tight spot. Their own religious leader, which is that dude in the silk robes who sits on a gold throne in Rome, yeah that guy! He is telling Catholics around the world that they support banning assault weapons. Talk about being stuck between a rock and hard place. This leaves a pretty basic question for US Catholics: your religious leaders support gun control. Why don’t you?
What we have here is an interesting situation. Right now major religious leaders are pledging their support for Obama and gun control, so will their followers fall in line like they have before or will the Vatican receive opposition from the faithful in the United States?
When it came to the issues like abortion, birth control and a whole mess of other things… many Catholics in the US have followed the Vatican’s word to the letter. They often look to the Vatican for guidance and leadership. Now that Pope Eggs Benedict has declared their support for gun control, this will be a true test of their alleged loyalty.
Or will we witness something entirely different? Will all these Catholics who didn’t hesitate to take up the Church’s anti-abortion position now oppose their own Church on gun control?
I have to say, it’s going to be be interesting to see if the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and American Catholics line up to support Obama’s proposed gun control measures since it’s been given the Vatican’s blessing.
Will Catholic members in Congress follow their pope or the NRA? Forgive me if I don’t hold my breath.
Many of the people listed above hold their religion like their politics and only follow them when it serves their own convenience.
